Hard water is one of the silent enemies of dishwashers — and very common in Vietnam. If left untreated, hard water reduces washing efficiency and significantly shortens the machine's lifespan.
What is hard water?
Hard water is water that contains a high concentration of dissolved minerals, primarily calcium and magnesium. When heated or evaporated, these minerals form limescale that adheres to metal components — including those inside the dishwasher compartment.
4 negative effects of hard water on dishwashers
- Limescale buildup in the machine compartment and pipes → reduced pump efficiency.
- Damage to the heating element (insulating mineral deposits).
- Cloudy, stained glassware after washing.
- Increased detergent consumption due to reduced cleaning effectiveness in hard water.
2 effective treatment methods
1) Use specialized dishwasher salt (most economical): pour Largo dishwasher salt into the machine's softener compartment. Set the correct hardness level on the machine for it to dispense just enough salt. Cost: 1 2kg bag lasts a very long time (calculated monthly).
2) Use integrated all-in-one tablets: Largo All-in-one contains built-in water softening agents. Suitable for soft to medium hard water. For very hard water, it is still recommended to combine with additional salt.

When is input water filtration necessary?
When the water is extremely hard (>21 °dH) and the entire household has experienced limescale buildup in kettles, filters, it is advisable to install an input water softener filter to protect washing machines, dishwashers, and water heaters alike.
